My eldest son rang me last Sunday, 27.11.05, and it went something like this...

"ring ring"
Me: Hello!
Caller: Hi Mum. It's me.
M: Hi Damien. How are you doing? (He's on the other side of the country and we haven't spoken in nearly four months, I think!)
D: I'm in the hospital.
M: What have you done this time? (Last time he thought he'd fractured his back!)
D: I'm fine. Everything's ok.
M (very confused): Ok. So what's the problem. You just told me you were in hospital.
D: Oh no. I'm AT the hospital.
M (even more confused): So....what's happening?
D: Oh! I'm here with my girlfriend.
M: Aah...Is she ok?
D: Yeah, they've just got her in for observation.
Pause for a moment....
D: We're in the maternity ward...
Pause again....
M: Are you saying...you're going to be a father?
D: No...no. I'm telling you you're going to be a grandmother!
M: Really. Oh my God. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you.
Aside to my hubby, who is driving - It's Damien. You're going to be a grandad - at which he looked distinctly unimpressed!
D: Are you really?
M: Of course I am! By the way, what is her name?
D: Haven't I told you? I'm sure I told Dad!
Pause again.
M: No, you haven't told me anything.
D: Her name is Candice. I'm in her room and you are on the speakerphone.
(Fine time to tell me that!!)

So we are going to be grandparents come the 1st of June next year, or thereabouts. I am really excited, although I would have liked to have at least made it to 40 before I earned that one. Still, he will at least be 20. I only made it to 18!

He is going to be a fantastic father. He is such a loving, caring, compassionate young man. He has always adored kids and been really good with them. I am looking forward to catching up with him one day. I love him very much, despite all the problems we have had between us, my fault as much as his. But I have never once doubted the love he had inside and was capable of showing and giving.

All my best going to him and his young lady on this next step in his journey.

I'd better stop before I get seriously maudlin!!
